CANCER RACE FOR LIFE AT EPSOM DOWNS - Sunday 19 June 2022
There were some 40,000 taking part in the Cancer Research Race for Life across the UK sponsored by and one event took place on 19 June 2022 at Epsom Downs, sponsored by Tesco and Scottish Power where members of Epsom Rotary assisted by marshalling the event. There were quite a good number taking part in the event, in either running, jogging or walking the 3k, 5k or 10k circuit around Epsom Downs with the Grandstand in view and overlooking the wonderful surroundings.
The team were briefed and asked to marshal the start and finish posts of the race, carrying the symbolic Race for Life Flags that stood tall into the sky and then the joggers and runners flags across the fields to give time for those running to make their way to the start line followed by joggers and then walkers.
We then marshalled the water station and the handing out of the medals and snacks which were rewarded to all the participants when they crossed the finishing line, and who were encouraged to ring the finishing large bell to celebrate and announce their wonderful achievements. The starting point set up was an inflated purple arch with Cancer research logo and could be seen all around the site.
The participants were all given an exercise warm up and music played by Heart Radio through the event with encouragement from the DJ to various individuals was announced through the event. The participants would have a number and many had labels pinned to their back too to say for whom they were taking part, which they could then pin to the Race for Life Board. Reading the messages made you quite emotional and minded to take part in the circuit next year. We also spent a time of course cheering the participants on, and since 2019 men also take part and in this race children and many dogs too. The last participant crossed the line at around 14hr. so our main tasks completed, so at the end of the event we helped clear up and of course promised to return next year
