Charter Celebration

Penrith Rotary’s 76th Birthday

On Friday 21st October Penrith Rotary celebrated it’s 76th Birthday. The Charter celebration, as it is called, commemorates the awarding of the club’s charter from Rotary International when the club was started in 1946.

The event was attended Penrith Rotary members, members from other Rotary clubs in the district, and by various dignitaries from both local and Rotary District organisations. A total of 53 partook of the evening.

Everyone enjoyed the event, and the George Hotel as usual served us a lovely meal with friendly service.

We were then treated to speeches from the District Governor of Rotary District 1190, our own president John Shorter as well as the star attraction, our speaker for the night Simon Yates.

The guest speaker Simon Yates, the climber and adventurer who lives locally, gave us a brilliant, illustrated talk of his mountaineering exploits all over the globe. He had us enthralled for 40 minutes before taking questions after which the evening was wound up.

The photograph shows the top table guests.

In the first photograph [Top Table 1], going clockwise from our President John Shorter [at 3 o’clock with the white badge], we have, guest speaker Simon Yates, Maureen Shorter, Sue Brookfield [President of Penrith Inner Wheel], John Rogerson [President of Penrith Lions], Ann Rogerson, Charlie Shepherd [Penrith Town Mayor], and finally District Governor Kath Bromilow [Rotary D1190, Cumbria & Lancashire].
