Breakfast Meeting at the Heronston Hotel

Mon, Feb 13th 2023 at 8:30 am - 10:00 am

Speaker: Ron Eccles

Our newest member, Ron Eccles gave a most interesting and entertaining overview of his life experiences.

Born in Leigh, Lancashire, Ron is the eldest of five boys. Following work on a farm, Ron was introduced to the Young Farmers and indeed became a livestock judge.

Having attended Leigh Grammar School Ron then went to Liverpool University (a big move for a lad from Leigh!) where he initially studied a number of modules before focussing on his BSc and PhD in pharmacology - the study of how medicines work and affect our bodies.

Having completed his studies Ron moved to Cardiff University as a lecturer. Ron is now Emeritus Professort at the University. It was at Cardiff University that Ron met his wife, a native of Baghdad, and they have since had a son and a daughter. Ron has five grandchildren, the youngest, Rose, being born just last Saturday!

Ron is widely reecognised as an expert in the common cold and has appeared on TV in this role, as recently as last week on the ITV Tonight programme "How To Boost your Immune System".

Now living in Ogmore by Sea, Ron's interests include photography, reading, birdwatching (though he says he's not a twitcher!) and, of course, Rotary, Ron having been President at Cardiff Llandaff Rotary. Ron has a particular interest in philosophy.

We are delighted to have Ron as a member of Rotary Bridgend.
