November Rotary Ramble

Garw Valley

Seven ramblers set off from Parc Calon Lan, at the top of the Garw Valley. The steady climb into the Darren Fawr woods gave us the first views of the surrounding country side. On reaching the top of Waun Tynewedd the full view of mountains and villages gave a new perspective of valley life that has developed after the loss of the coal mines.

The ramble then took us past the memorial to a young local soldier, who lost his life in the Iraq war. A sobering moment on the walk. On the route down to Pontycymmer we passed the remains of several buildings used by prisoners in WW2 whilst working on the surrounding forest. A walk back along the valley trail showed how the land has been improved over the years from coal dust to flowing water and lakes.

To finish the outing an enjoyable meal and further pleasant views were enjoyed at the Llangeinor Arms.
