JUNE 2023 NEWSLETTER

Enjoy a recap of what Rotary in Cardigan Bay have been up to since our last newsletter.

A message from our President

Welcome to our final newsletter of the Rotary year 2022/23. We will be celebrating our first year as a chartered Rotary Club on the 9th. And what an amazing year it has been. As Rotarians, we strive to put service before self, in other words, we think of the needs of others, and that is very evident in our current Community service projects.

Admittedly, we have stood on the corners of Aberaeron and Cardigan with our buckets collecting for global causes (Ukraine, Turkey & Syria) and held tombola’s and field games at local festivals to raise funds for local charities, that puts the FUN in fundraising, but the real impact has been the practical, hands on service within our local communities.

Our members have made great use of their vocational and life skills to tackle real and present issues, learning new skills along the way. We won’t be putting our beach mats out and relaxing in the summer sunshine though… We will be holding our Club Assembly this month where we review what we have achieved and submit our plans for the coming year… and beyond. There are some exciting ideas on the table, and members who are keen to get started. My wish-list for 2023/24 is topped by gaining more members and volunteers to join us. I do dare to dream about a membership whereby we can really extend our services to our communities from Cardigan to Lampeter to Llanrhystud. Many hands make light work.

YOUTH

Rotary gives young people the opportunity to showcase their talents in their annual Youth Competitions. These include:

Young musician… Youth speaks. (Welsh and English)… Young writer (Welsh and English)…Young chef… young photographer…. Young environmentalist

We are hoping to enter more of our talented young people in a wider section of these categories next year.

JULY 11th @ Ysgol Gyfun Aberaeron: 9 Primary Schools are performing in a singing concert to showcase their work and help raise funds for their schools and RiCB’s local charity’s fund.

      COMMUNITYPROJECTS

The kitchen at the Cardigan Foodbank is fully fitted and open for business, making ready meals to supplement the food distribution to their users. The equipment is ready and waiting for those wanting to learn and extend their cooking skills under the tutelage of the qualified chef Nick and Mandy.

RiCB have developed an advice booklet to assist foodbank users to manage their budgeting and financial planning. These have been distributed to foodbank users and been well received. This resource has generated interest with District 1150’s DGE, Mary Adams who is considering introducing it to other Rotary clubs.

Ysgol Gynradd Aberaeron

We have been working with the children on the school’s Eco-Council, ages 5 – 11, to establish their newly erected polytunnel. The children have planned the progress of the project, from design, to planning, to planting and to growing. They have considered the impact on the environment at every stage, reducing, reusing and recycling as much of the resources as possible. Watering has been a challenge but thanks to a 1000l water tank delivery, the children now have a supply of water nearer the polytunnel.

They have been supported by RiCB to organise a school-wide sunflower growing competition. This has given every child in school the opportunity to have a go at growing something… and hopefully inspire them to grow other things too.

They are planning a plant sale as part of the school’s PTA Summer Fair on 29th June, to raise funds that they can reinvest into the project.

RiCB also support pupils with their reading, growing in confidence and improving their learning potential.
