Rotary's theme for September... Basic Education & Literacy

Did You Know?

  • More than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. That's 17 percent of the world's adult population.

Also, according to the National Literacy Trust:

  • 16% of adults are considered to be ‘functionally illiterate’ in the United Kingdom

  • 1.7 million adults in England, have literacy levels below those expected of an 11-year-old. 1 in 8 (12% / 216,000 people) adults in Wales lack basic literacy skills.

  • The most frequent causes of illiteracy in adults are: dropping out of school and difficult living conditions, including poverty

  • Only 51% of pre-school children are read to daily

  • One in eight disadvantaged children don’t own a single book

Basic education is not just literacy - it's what helps us to function successfully within our societies.  Basic Education & Literacy is directly linked to Supporting Education - one of Rotary’s seven areas of focus - that expands and creates opportunities for addressing other socio-economic issues.

What is Rotary in Cardigan Bay doing to address this?

Addressing Basic Education & Literacy: Our Commitment to Ysgol Gynradd Aberaeron: At Rotary in Cardigan Bay, we believe that access to quality education and literacy is a cornerstone of a thriving community. We are proud to support Ysgol Gynradd Aberaeron in their journey towards educational excellence and empowerment.

English Reading Support We understand that both Welsh and English literacy is a crucial skill for young learners. That's why we're actively involved in supporting the children of Ysgol Gynradd Aberaeron with their English reading skills. Our dedicated volunteers work closely with students, providing personalised guidance and fostering a love for reading. We believe that a strong foundation in Welsh & English literacy sets the stage for a lifetime of learning and success.

Nurturing Creativity Through Art Creativity is a powerful tool for self-expression and problem-solving. We're passionate about nurturing the creative spirit of these young minds through art. We aim to encourage students to explore their artistic abilities, express themselves through various mediums, and develop essential cognitive skills that will benefit them in all aspects of life.

Enhancing Communication Skills Effective communication is a skill that transcends the classroom and extends into every facet of life. To help students develop their communication skills, we facilitate small group interactions. These sessions not only enhance their ability to express themselves but also promote teamwork and cooperation, vital skills for the future.

Rotakids and Eco Council We're proud to support and collaborate with Rotakids and the Eco Council at Ysgol Gynradd Aberaeron. These initiatives empower students to take an active role in shaping their school environment and community. Through Rotakids, young leaders emerge, learning valuable leadership and service skills. Our involvement with the Eco Council encourages environmental responsibility and sustainability, instilling a sense of global citizenship in the next generation.

Join Us in Making a Difference Our commitment to basic education and literacy is just one facet of our broader mission to serve our community. We invite you to join us in this noble endeavour. Whether you have a passion for education, a love for literacy, or a desire to support the youth of Cardigan Bay, there's a place for you in our volunteer-driven efforts.

If you'd like to get involved or learn more about our work at Ysgol Gynradd Aberaeron, and how we can extend this support to other schools in the area, please reach out to us. Together, we can empower the next generation and build a brighter future for Cardigan Bay.

Thank you for your support and dedication to making a positive impact on our community.

Yours in Service and Education,

Philomena Dunkelman President Rotary in Cardigan Bay
