Saffery Rotary Walk & Island Games T-shirts arrive in South Africa (4 September 2023)

T-shirts have, again, been dispatched to the Charles Duna Primary School.

This is the second time that Gill and Jerry Girard have dispatched T-shirts to the Charles Duna Primary school in New Brighton near Port Elizabeth, where they visited a few years ago on an excursion from a Silversea cruise ship.

Their guide was a young man who had grown up in this Township and knew first hand about the problems and difficulties that the children face.

The school is situated in a very poor Township, but under an inspirational Headteacher, the children are receiving both nutritious food and a good education.

Gill and Jerry noticed that they were short of sports clothing, when they noticed that the teachers had to  wash the morning's kit, so that it could be worn in the afternoon. This gave rise to the idea of sending used T-shirts from the 2019 Saffery Rotary Walk and this was repeated this year, but also including clothes from the Island Games.

Because of Covid, this is the first opportunity that they have had to again send clothes down to the school.

Thanks are due to DHL who arranged for the boxes to be safely delivered and to everyone who took the trouble to wash and return their tee shirts.

Attached is a letter from the Principal with more pictures of the children wearing their Guernsey T-shirts and Island Games caps - please click HERE to view.
