Welsh coastal path and Sully Island

November Rotary Ramble took in a section of the Welsh coastal path and included a crossing to Sully Island.

The seven ramblers set off on a cold, overcast, but dry morning, we headed East along the coastal path eventually leading us to the tidal crossing point for Sully Island.

The crossing whilst rugged, was relatively straight forward, and given that the low water point had not yet been reached by the tide, we had a good four hour window to cross, explore and return to the main land.

The islands of Flat Holm (Marconi made the first cross sea radio transmission from the island) and Steep Holm could be seen clearly from the highest point. The islands path led us back past the remains of an early 1900 shipwreck. Not much remains now but the hull bottom, though it gave a good indication of the boat’s width and length.

The return crossing was again easy going with the sun appearing and a coastal breeze coming down the channel.

A most enjoyable and well deserved drink and meal at the Captains Wife Pub, completed this month’s outing.
