May 2024 Newsletter

A small gesture makes a HUGE impact.

Wow! May already. The penultimate month of the Rotary year 2023/24.

Plans are already being made for when the new year begins on July 1st. We know we will be losing some of our members, due to personal and work commitments, in June, and they will be greatly missed, but we never take our foot off the gas in reaching out to the community to encourage new members and volunteers.

Feelgood Fridays

We have a membership stall at the weekly Friday market held in the Memorial Hall, New Quay. This is a great opportunity to showcase what Rotary in Cardigan Bay has and is achieving in the local community. It also gives us a chance to find out if there are any local service projects we can be involved with.

Farewell to Ernie Gunner

We bade a sad farewell to our fellow Rotarian Ernie Gunner of the Aberaeron a’r Cylch RC who passed away in April. Ernie recently received a long service certificate and letter from Rotary International President, Gordon McInally, in honour of his 47 years in Rotary. What a great man; what an achievement!

Sunflower Growing Competition

The annual sunflower growing competition is well on its way. This year, there are three schools taking part, Ysgol Gynradd Aberaeron; Ysgol Gynradd Llannon; and Ysgol Gynradd Llanarth. A spectacular1000 sunflowers to brighten up West Wales. Judging will be before the end of term in July.

School Garden Projects

The children of Ysgol Gynradd Aberaeron have planted out their beds in the polytunnel and are doing a fabulous job nurturing their plants. We have managed to get a series of lightweight hosepipes long enough to fill the water tank from the main tap on the school building. It certainly makes the job of watering a lot easier!

School’s Concert

We are looking forward to the 2024 school’s concert on June 11th. Seven primary schools from the area will be showcasing their talents with traditional songs and dances at Ysgol Gyfun Aberaeron. Building on last year’s success, a raffle will be held to raise funds for local charities and Rotary in Cardigan Bay will have an information stall to showcase what we do.

Llangrannog Memorial Garden

We have been working alongside the Llangrannog memorial garden volunteer community group, clearing and maintaining the gardens, meeting up on the first Sunday of each month. What a difference a spot of weeding and pruning makes!

Supporting Local Causes

Our recent donations include support for Cardigan-based Only Boys Aloud, Rotary International's End Polio Now campaign, and the farming charity DPJ. These contributions reflect our commitment to diverse and impactful causes.

May Social

This month’s social was Sunday lunch at Bryn a’r Bragdy in Brynhoffnant. Highly recommended!
