High Wycombe Rotarians are Top of the Class!

Helping with reading in schools is a win-win situation

High Wycombe Rotarians pass on the joys of reading

Two years ago the Rotary Club of High Wycombe set up a group in conjunction with Bucks County Council Education Department to provide volunteers to read with children at local schools. Following initial training and induction, the volunteers visit the schools on a regular weekly basis to listen to children read and encourage them to improve their reading and other social and communication skills.

What the pupils say: an appreciation of the schemeThere are currently twelve Club members and four members of Inner Wheel that give between one and two hours per week reading with pupils at seven local primary schools. Feedback from the teachers and heads of the schools has been overwhelmingly positive as all the pupils have benefited greatly in terms of both reading and development of general social skills over this period. In fact all parties, readers, teachers, and pupils alike, agree that the experience is thoroughly enjoyable and very worthwhile.

"Its fantastic to see the progress that the pupils make. The teachers are telling us that some pupils below the average reading age at the start of the year are above it by the end of the year"
