ROTARY DISTRICT 1240 – YOUTH ACTIVITIES
Non Face to Face Competitions
Please don’t forget that non-face to face competitions are still possible. Yes, schools may not want too much interference at present but try your families, grandchildren, outside bodies such as scouts, brownies, and youth clubs etc; I have already circulated the Youth Competition Booklet online but if there is a need for more please email me. This online booklet with a copy of a letter may interest schools especially those with Interact and RotaKids.
The Non Face to Face Competitions are shown below and at this time all entries should be submitted to the respective Youth Coordinator by Friday 5th MARCH 2021. This could change once the final date for National Entries is announced.
As the National Young Photographer Coordinator, I have received requests for answers about changes in view of Covid-19. Please note the Information Leaflet which I have circulated to Club Secretaries.
To ensure you are all aware of the themes for the competitions they are repeated as follows:-
YOUNG ARTIST – THEME= ‘WILD NATURE’.
YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHER – THEME = ‘WILD NATURE’. More Information is here
YOUNG FILMAKER –THEME= ‘CHALLENGE’.
YOUNG WRITER – THEM= ‘MY HAPPIEST DAY’.
YOUNG ENVIRONMENTALIST – THEME= ‘CLIMATE CHANGE/CARBON REDUCTION’.
Please encourage young people to enter the Young Environmentalist as this sits well within school syllabus and I am sure there are many young people working in small groups to complete a project such as litter picking and they could report on this and may win a prize.
All Information Leaflets are downloadable from the Rotary GB&I website but any problems let me know.
More information can be found here and a guide to send out to schools is here
Please do not forget the ‘Nessie Comes to Essex’ Writing Competition which is due in November. If extensions are required I could make it 1st December but please push this competition.
Face to Face Competitions
Young Chef, Young Musician and Youth Speaks (Debate) may go ahead depending how this virus clears up. Speaking to other Districts and Regions, some are going ahead with dates and venues hoping for a change.
Region 3 which is our Region have decided to wait any decision until January 2021 so I will update from now until then with any news as I seem to be on Zoom every night at present.
I am aware of two clubs trying to get a face to face off the ground via Zoom. Excellent and we would like the feedback please.
RYLA and LAMP
Please note that we are still considering this but it depends on how Covid 19 affects us. Both Steve Wallbank and I have been involved in RYLA meetings on zoom with Regional Representatives and we await a point of restrictions lifted.
Youth Exchange and NGSE
This Youth Project has been put on hold and no new applications are being processed. I am attending a meeting (on Zoom) with our two young people who should have been at a Camp this year and have agreed to attend next year. This meeting brings together all young people in this position.
RotaKids/Interact; Once again this project is on hold unless clubs are able to contact schools. Having had a meeting with District Youth Coordinators it was agreed that we would set up a Face book Page for RotaKids/Interact. We are also asking that we have Interact Clubs from feeder RotaKids Clubs were possible so that we may have a clear run from Junior School to Secondary School and hopefully inspire new Rotarians eventually. This of course needs a big helping hand from Clubs. Details for RotaKids Clubs will be circulated and once Covid 19 goes we may look to visit Secondary Schools to establish an Interact Club or vice versa.
