Rotary in Yorkshire would like to thank all those who have contributed to our Appeal for help following the flooding in our area. The Appeal Fund will remain open for some time,
There has been considerable infrastructure damage to bridges, roads and public buildings. Of course, these are the responsibility of the authorities to repair and replace, but the timescales involved mean that communities are going to be suffering transport difficulties for some time as well as the damage to their homes and businesses.
The initial clean-up phase is almost over, and Rotarians have been out in force helping with this work. The demand for cleaning supplies was huge but has abated, and the Funds have been supplying additional professional cleaning and disinfecting help where necessary. We are indebted to those Rotarians from outside our district who delivered supplies particularly to the Calder Valley, where the damage was severe.
In order to maximise the effect of the funds we have already received, we have pledged the following:
£10,000 to the Calderdale Community Fund.
£ 5,000 to the York Community Fund for the City of York
£ 5,000 to the York Community Fund for use in North Yorkshire outside the York city limits.
This £20,000 will be matched by Central Government, and used for cash grants to individuals whose homes were flooded. These grants are already being given out by the Funds with minimum bureaucracy, after claims are checked with the local authority records.
Our next actions will be to deal with requests from clubs for help with community recovery projects. These are being put together now, and we expect many requests for assistance as the needs crystallise.
Please make payments to RI District 1040, and send them to our District Treasurer:
