KSV (Yorkshire School in Sri Lanka) Appeal

Following the devastating Tsunami on Boxing Day 2004, the Clubs in Rotary District 1040 raised in excess of £250,000 to build a new school in the east of Sri Lanka "“ the Kaluwanchikudy Saraswathy Vidyalayam (KSV "“ The Yorkshire School in Sri Lanka).

Working closely with District 3220 and the Rotary Club of Cinnamon Gardens in Colombo,    and despite many hold ups due to the Tamil Tiger conflict in the area, the construction of the school was completed in September 2007, and handed over to the Sri Lankan Government.

In November 2015, a District Team visited the school to be greeted by happy and grateful children, but problems with some of the school buildings due to a combination of the weather and lack of funding were evident. Pitted floors in classrooms and hall, leaking roofs, poor electrics, and the children’s toilet block, all needing urgent attention and repair.

Working closely with the local Rotary Club of Kalmunai, and the local Education Zone Director, Rotarian Peter Lloyd and the District 1040 International Committee have costed the repairs at £10,500. District Council at its meeting on 7th May 2016 agreed that an appeal should be made to all Clubs in D1040 to request support in raising the money required to fund the repairs to building.

The District Fund Raising Appeal will be co-ordinated by the District International Committee and Rtn Peter Lloyd, and the RC of Kalmunai have agreed to manage and monitor closely the project in Sri Lanka and to work with the Education Zone, and the staff, parents and children of the KSV Yorkshire School throughout the repair project and into the future.

The building of the KSV remains one of the proudest achievements of D1040 and involved a contribution from every Club in the District. We are confident that with the enthusiasm and agreement for future monitoring of the KSV by the local RC of Kalmunai in conjunction with the Education Zone, plus  the continuing support from our original partners at Cinnamon Gardens RC, these urgent repairs can bring the school back to its original standard, thereby supporting the education of the children, and ensuring sustainability of education and community provision in a relatively poor area of Sri Lanka.
