Usual business and fun at Scarborough
Rotary District Conference 2016
Our District Conference was held in Scarborough at the start of October and we were treated to the usual enjoyable and informative weekend.
Our Club was represented by 6 members plus their partners and we all enjoyed the hospitality of the Palm Court Hotel as our base. 640 Rotarians and their partners attended the conference which in addition to celebrating the Centenary of Foundation (Rotary’s own Charity) had ‘Youth is the foundation of Rotary’ as its theme.
After a Black Tie dinner on the Friday in the Spa Centre, delegates were entertained by Bobby Davro – not to everyone’s liking but at least he got people talking!!!
Conference had many speakers during the weekend including an amazing presentation by ‘Canine Partners’. Malcolm Wells from the Charity which supports adults 18+ (both civilians and former service personnel) showed how the dogs can support someone with physical disability that affects their daily life. The dogs demonstrated how they can open cupboards and doors, load and unload washing machines, fetch remote controls and collect the post and even help someone with their coat. The dogs enable people live life more independently.
Eric Knowles, the British Antiques Expert, spoke to conference about his work as Rotary Foundation Champion promoting the work of the foundation and imploring everyone to support it so that the vital work it does can continue. On the Saturday afternoon he spoke to the partner’s session about his career in Antiques and on Bargain Hunt.
After dinner in the hotel on Saturday, members went to the Spa Theatre to listen to Tenors Encore entertain with a wide range of songs and then it was onto the main hall for dancing with an ABA tribute band – they had all the songs and kept the dance floor busy.
