Douai to Gouda Cycle Ride
The Team in Training
" End Polio Now" that's the aim of the Bexhill Cycle Team in this major fundraising event
Sponsor our team of 11 riders who are taking the tough way of linking our contact Clubs
Douai-Sud, France and Gouda, Netherlands.
Search " Just Giving Polio Bexhill " to sponsor the riders to END POLIO NOW.
On Friday 26th
May 11 Rotarians will set out from their twin club Douai Sud in France to cycle
the 200 miles to their other twin club at Gouda in Holland. On the way they
will calling at Oudenarde Belgium, which is twinned with Hastings Rotary Club,
Breda Rotary Club and Papendrecht (whose school sends a team to the local Rotary
public speaking competition each year). Much of their route takes them along the
course of the River Scheldt so is fairly level (so they hope!).
The purpose of
the trip is not only to meet old friends and make new ones but, more important,
to raise money for what is hopefully the final push in eliminating the scourge
of polio worldwide. The older amongst us can remember when this dreadful
disease killed or left permanently disabled literally thousands of people every
year. It is now only seen in small areas in Asia and Africa and close to being
overcome at these sites.
All the money
collected in sponsorship will be multiplied by the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation and, with the end of this disease so close, it is vital that we raise
resources to conquer it for good and all. The riders can be sponsored on line
