A Record Crowd Enjoys Castle Carr Fountain Display

On Sunday 2nd July people flocked to the estate of Castle Carr to see its famous pressure fed fountain rise majestically well over 120 foot into the air.

This event organised by the Rotary Club of Halifax is now in its seventh year and has become an annual fixture in the club’s fund raising activities.

The weather was bright albeit a bit breezy, but organizer Rotarian Sherri Highley-Hammond was a little worried earlier in the week as the skies were full of rain and the forecast was uncertain. But in the event the fine weather drew in probably a record number of persons (plus many of our well behaved four-legged friends) from not only Calderdale but further afield with families travelling from not only Manchester but also from York!

As ever Bryan & Jenny Harkness supported by friends were providing ice-cream cornets, mostly with Cadbury Flakes, just as fast as the scoop could delve into the tubs! Nearly five hundred were produced and sold until stock ran out.

The organisers would like to thank everyone who supported the walk and fountain event which will have raised approximately £5000 for local, national and international charities. The first donation is about to occur with a sum of £500 to be given to the international WaterAid Charity which provides access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation in developing countries.

In particular thanks go to the owners of the estate, Yorkshire Water for ‘turning on the taps’, and Calder Valley Search and Rescue for attending ‘just in case’!

Finally a local filmmaker Alan Hamer has produced a five minute video showing the walk, the Yorkshire scenery on route and towards the end the fountain ‘playing’ high into the sky. After Chatsworth this is probably England’s second highest! Thanks to Alan and also to the accompanying music by Analog Heart. The link then is:- https://vimeo.com/224060069
