Rotary District 1040 Young Chef competition final 2018

Seven Young Chefs from across Yorkshire and Humberside competed recently in the Rotary Young Chef District Final at Betty’s Cookery School Harrogate.

Sponsored by individual Rotary Clubs, those taking part came from Bradford, Mirfield, Northallerton Roundhay Leeds, Skipton, York and Wakefield

The young Chefs were asked to produce a three-course healthy meal on a limited budget of £15 within a two-hour time frame. Marks were awarded for a variety of skills from choice of menu, planning, hygiene to the taste and presentation of the meal. The standards of cooking and presentation were of a very high standard.  The judges were Jenny Culver and Chris Taylor from Betty’s Cookery School.

Amy Bettles, from Archbishop Holgate School York, was the winner and will now compete in the Regional Final in Leeds on March 10th.  Amy’s menu was a starter of White crab ring with brown crab mayonnaise and celeriac spaghetti with dill followed by a main course of chicken roulade with basil and mozzarella fondant potato, parmesan crisp, purple sprouting broccoli and a sun-dried tomato sauce. For desert a deconstructed apple crumble with a salted caramel ice cream and date sauce.

All competitors received a certificate a commemorative apron and a medal, the winner’s trophy was presented by Rotary District Governor Robert Morphet.

Three finalists will go on to compete at a Regional level with young people from 2 other Rotary Districts from Eastern Central England . Amy will be joined in the Regional final by runners up Amena Shaikh, from Thornhill Community Academy and Megan Cullen, from Prince Henry’s School in Otley.

The winner from the Regional final will go onto the National Rotary Young Chef competition, which will be held in April. The overall winner will receive a trip to Italy thanks to the main sponsor Fillippio Berio, receive tuition from a Michelin Star Chef and a cash prize of £250.
