Happy Feet at the Soapbox Derby!!

For the first time Wickford Rotary entered a soapbox in the Billericay Rotary Soapbox Derby; and this was the result!!

So last year Community Services Chair Pauline MIlls helped to marshall at the Soapbox Derby in Billericay, and she got the inspiration. "All I need is to persuade the members to enter a soapbox for next years' Derby; now how do I do that?" And the rest is history

Suffice to say that a year later through the sterling efforts of Rotarian Peter Carter a Soapbox was created. The theme was developed based on the 2006 Oscar winning Happy Feet movie , all about a penguin who doesn't have a song to attract a mate, so  the Wickford Soapbox turned up resembling an iceberg.

Look out for the jump in the BBC video

"So now all I need is an idiot to drive the thing" thought Pauline and her eyes rested on the face of Rotarian Mark Williamson. Supported by his team of sturdy pushers, Nick, Rob and Tom, Mark ventured down the hill to an amazing yell from the crowd. The jumps were interesting (see the videos) and while not the fastest Soapbox on the course, certainly one of the most interesting!

Apart from the fun, sponsorship of the event brought some money into the coffers as well, so a winner all round.

Will we do it again next year? Well, let's wait and see!
