Annual Cycle Event for families and more experienced riders.
The first Tour d'Ilmington was held in 2015. This was as a result of a discussion about new ways in which the club could raise money for local chariries and good causes. The enormous increase in interest in cycling both nationally and around Shipston prompted the thought that perhaps this could be an area worth exploring. Concerns were expressed about the ever increasing number of cycling events being held in the area . If we were to run an event it needed to be different with the focus on a family event on quiet roads and a course which could be completed by youngsters and inexperienced cyclists.
Whilst we only had 32 riders the enthusiasm of those taking part encouraged us to plan another Tour in 2016. Year on year the success of the Tour has grown to the point that in 2018 there were over 200 riders taking part over either a 10 mile flat course or 30 mile hilly course. In addition in 2018 we had an 'Eroica' route of 100km for riders of classic steel racing cycles. All enjoyed refeshments at the Tour HQ at Newbold Village Hall where an additional 50 passing cyclists popped in. All donated generously to the fundraising.
None of this would have been possible without the support of Rotarians and friends of Rotary who have given freely of their time to help organise, marshal and cater for the event. Plans are now underway for 2019 with the event being held on 30 June!!!!
