Rotary Supports the NHS!

This week Wickford Rotary leapt at the chance to support the NHS and the local community to protect our over 80s from COVID-19

Since the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine has been approved we have of course al been waiting for the day when it would start being deployed among the population. And this weekend that waiting finally stopped.

The NHS set up a Vaccination Centre at the Nevendon Community Centre over two days, administering the vaccine to the over 80s and most vulnerable in the town. A wonderful pre-Christmas present for our older neighbours.

And so it was that Rotary was contacted to see if we could help manage the traffic on the site, as people arrived for timed slots to receive the vaccine. Not an easy task for two reasons: a) this is the time of the years when a lot of our active members are tied up in taking the Sleigh around the streets of the town and b) because a large proportion of our members are in that older category where they themselves are shielding or very vulnerable.

However, with the help of our Honorary Members and Friends of the Club, we were able to pull together sufficient of a team to keep the vehicular areas of the site clear and moving, making sure people were parked safely and ensuring the safety of our older residents in traversing the car park and surrounding areas.

For a lot of Saturday and for a short while on Sunday this became a task of queue management, as large numbers of people arrived, but by the end of the day all who came passed through the site safely.

Many thanks to the Members and Friends who were able to help on this occasion.
