Strathcarron Hospice - Dare to be Different
Last week's meeting was held at Strathcarron Hospice where we were hosted by Billy Andrew, Director of Operations, and Marjory Mackay, Director of Nursing.
After an excellent meal supplied by the Hospice staff, Billy and Marjory gave members an update on progress at the Hospice which celebrated its 30th anniversary last year.
Billy outlined their 5 year strategy, highlighting a number of key issues for them, one of which was that they had to continue to provide excellent service and they had to get it right first time. They are continuing to develop their 'at home' service and maintain good links with the community. Volunteers played a huge part in the running of the hospice, giving their time freely which was valued at around £250k in an annual running cost of over £5 million.
Marjory then explained some of the issues facing the clinical team and the strategies they were developing. One of the key issues was that they want to influence the quality of end of life care, not just in the hospice but externally as well. They are developing a home nursing model, bringing their expertise to homes in conjunction with other healthcare professionals. One factor constantly under scrutiny is the need to balance efficient working practices with the need to give patients full care and attention.
Allan Macpherson proposed a vote of thanks for a very informative and thought provoking meeting before the presentation of a cheque for £5000 was made. This was money raised from the annual Am-Am golf competition which, although it was cancelled, was collected due to the generosity of teams and sponsors who declined a refund. Alan Crockett, captain of Dunblane New Golf Club, which provides the course free of charge, came along to the meeting and helped with the cheque presentation.
The club is also planning further events to help redress the shortfall, the first of which is a Christmas Concert on 8 December in the magnificent setting of Dunblane Cathedral featuring Whitburn Band and the Rosenethe Singers.
Tickets are £12 (£10 concession) and available from Smallprint in Dunblane, Mailers in Bridge of Allan or any club member.
