In Peak Condition
Last Thursday's meeting of the Rotary Club of Bridge of Allan and Dunblane saw a change from our usual venue when we visited The Peak at Stirling Sports Village, Springkerse. Following a very enjoyable 2 course meal and coffee at Zak's cafe overlooking the ice rink, members and guests were given a talk by Catherine Mondoa RGN., RSCN., BSc., MSc who is a Nurse Fellow of the European Cardiac Society and a Scottish Patient Safety Fellow.
Catherine's talk was on cardiac rehabilitation; she has been a nurse for 34 years, most of which has been in the field of cardiology, has delivered cardiac rehabilitation services for 18 years and continues to feel passionate about this important aspect of cardiac care.
Catherine outlined the main causes of cardiac problems, of which smoking, poor diet and lack of exercise were high on the list, before illustrating some of the significant advances in treatment which have led to a continuing downward trend in the incidence of death from heart problems.
As a Consultant Nurse and Cardiology Department Manager she is able to utilise her expertise in caring for patients and their families. She has the opportunity to develop innovative services in NHS Forth Valley as well as being able to influence local and national policy. Following the talk, Catherine gave us a brief tour of the Peak where the NHS has recently purchased space within the building. This has enabled it to provide a range of cardiac rehabilitation programmes which utilise the facilities including a swimming pool, a very well equipped gym, a climbing wall and fitness rooms.
Mary Fraser thanked Catherine on behalf of the members for a very interesting and useful talk.
