Visit to the site of the Battle of Sheriffmuir

Sun, Sep 1st 2013 at 12:00 am - 12:00 am

Members of the club and the Queen Victoria School Interact Club were given a talk and guided tour of the site of the Battle of Sheriffmuir which took place in 1715.

On Sunday, club members and members of the Interact Club at Queen Victoria School together with friends and guests were given a fascinating guided tour of the location of the 1715 Battle of Sheriffmuir by club member and experienced historical guide, Ranald Shepherd. Starting at the McRae Memorial on the road up to Sheriffmuir, Ranald explained the background to the battle between the Jacobites and the Government troops and how the various decisions were made which ultimately led to a fairly inconclusive outcome. A tour round the site, up to the Gathering Stone and back to the memorial, gave the audience an insight into the key decisions which had to be made without the modern benefits of instant communication. The tour concluded with a visit to the Atlantic Wall Training Ground located in the Ochils above Sheriffmuir, where preparations for the D-Day landings were carried out.

Ranald was thanked for a very informative and interesting tour.
