The first round of this year's Young Chef competition was held on Wednesday 4 December at Dunblane High School.
The entrants were all from Dunblane High: Samindi Gunasinghe and Anna Clelland were in S5 and Heather Gormley and Stephanie Verrall (who won the competition last year) were in S6.
Several members of the club were present to watch the 4 girls prepare their two chosen dishes which they had to source for under £10 and prepare in just 2 hours.
They are judged on a number of criteria including choice, skills, neatness, presentation, food appearance and flavour.
The meals were judged by Shaune Hall, chef lecturer at Forth Valley College, who had great difficulty in selecting a winner from the exceptionally high standard of dishes. In fact, Shaune commented that his scoring had given less than 2 points separating the first three contestants.
This year's winner was Samindi Gunasinghe whose meal was: a starter of Eggs Mimosa on a Bed of Feta Cheese Salad and main course of Devilled Chicken with Fried Rice.
Community Service Convener, John Kilby, thanked Sheila Nairn for once again hosting the event and Shaune Hall for not only judging the dishes but also for his very constructive comments and suggestions to the contestants. John presented prizes to each of the young chefs and said he was looking forward to following Samindi's progress in Round 2.
