President Colin Strachan welcomed members and visitor, Peter Williams, to last week's meeting at the Westlands Hotel.
It was the turn of another new member, Andrew Hilley, to address members and give his Face to Face presentation.
Andrew talked about the 4 key influences in his life: sport, science, travel and languages. He showed a slide with the heading 'Shettleston to Kippen - 30610 miles' which illustrated the various places he had been during his life. Born in Govan and brought up in Shettleston, Andrew moved to Darlington at the age of 12 and had, by then, decided on science as his career path. He studied physics at Jesus College, Cambridge then changed to Material Science and Metallurgy after 2 years. His presentation included a photo of his student railcard, illustrating how fashions (and hairstyles) have changed since he was at university. During his time at Cambridge, his sporting interests included rowing and he took part in the Henley Regatta.
Following graduation, he joined Johnson Matthey, a speciality chemicals company, where he was a research scientist before moving on to Sales and Marketing then Business Development. His career took him to the USA working for a speciality adhesive company whose customer base included leading micro electronics companies such as Intel and Nokia. This market was worth around $5.2 bn. in 2012 within an overall market of $1370 bn. for electronic equipment.
Andrew met and married Agnés in France where he worked for 8 years before returning to the States, then off to Europe where he learned Dutch and German. After 3 years in Europe, he was on his travels again, this time to the Far East, based in Hong Kong before his final career move took him back to Minnesota and finally to Kippen where they now reside, hence the reason for the slide title.
Nick Rawlings thanked Andrew on behalf of the club for a fascinating talk.
