District Governor 2016 -17 is Phil Poole
A warm welcome from Phil Poole
I was born in Todmorden, Yorkshire and currently living in Halifax, and apart from 8 years
in Carlisle I have lived in the Calder Valley, managing businesses in the textile trade.
I am married to Judith for 47 years with two adult
children Justine and Gareth. Judith and I have run the family business for 30+ year which is
still ongoing, developing special
I joined Rotary Club of Brighouse in 1991 and became
President in 1994-95 and I have served on and chaired most club
committees. I joined the district team in 1999 and the district/RIBI positions are listed
1999-2003 District Rotaract Liaison Officer
2003-2006 RIBI Rotaract Liaison Officer
2004-2006 District Membership Services Chairman
2006-2009 Assistant Governor South West Group
2008-2009 District Training Officer
2011-2015 District Secretary
2014 2015 District Governor Nominee
2015-2016 District Governor Elect
The 2016-2017 Rotary
International internal message of "Rotary
Serving Humanity" fits very well with the Rotary perennial motto of "Service Above Self" but
please remember the unofficial District 1040
slogan of "This is what we do for
The 2016-17 year is a momentous one for Rotary;
Especially in District 1040 which has grown to 103 clubs.
Although serving the clubs sounds a tall order for me as District Governor (DG)
and my successors, I am pleased to say
that thanks to so many clubs organising joint meetings of 2 and sometimes more
clubs for the DG's official visit, I think it will be manageable, and could cut
down the travel.
Our own charity The Rotary Foundation is 100 years old
and the District Foundations Committee are ready to help clubs to get Involved
via the various grants. I hope that all Rotarians will help to celebrate the
centenary by increasing our contributions to it. Then in years to come we can support projects
both locally and internationally in
the spirit of "joined up rotary".
We are close to eradicating Polio and I hope that we
might together do an initiative to help achieve this while at the same time
raising the awareness of what Rotary has done in this arena.
Increasing the Public
Image of Rotary is essential for Rotary to prosper and grow. I am proud to be a Rotarian, and of what we do, and achieve . Rotary Club Central will
help to value the service that we give as well as the donations that we
raise. This is the most import project
undertaken to promote what Rotary does and achieves. It values that service that we do .
In the spirit of " joined up rotary" it is my
hope that by supporting the International and Community/Vocational projects,
not forgetting the very important Youth Services projects especially RYLA which is where we might find future younger
Rotarians, we will increase awareness and interest in what we do and so
increase the membership to sustain
Rotary for many years to come in District 1040.
I wish you all the best for this Rotary year and I am
proud to be part of the District Team that is here to serve.
