Chris Chatfield was the firstirst and foremost a Vulcan
pilot. Started flying aged 17 in Tiger Moths - no radio, no electrics at
all, just a map and the confidence of youth! Flew 10 different types of
aircraft. Flew with USAF in their refuelling aircraft (KC 135 - converted 707)
during the Vietnam War. Also flew Victor Air to Air refuelling aircraft in the
RAF. Left the Air force for 2 years and flew with British Midland, rejoined the
RAF and went into computing in the years when computers were larger than
aircraft! Awarded MBE for services to IT during first Gulf War.
His talk will concentrate on the Vulcan in the cold War years, why we were on alert, with a nuclear weapon, ready at 15 minutes notice to fly into Russia.
