I am a paediatrician/neonatologist currently working in Juba, South Sudan.
I am South African originally but spent most of my paediatric training in Wales…which is where I met Angela Gorman, then a senior nursing sister, in the early 2000s. We have kept in touch over the years due to our shared interest in bringing much needed medical care to some of the world’s most vulnerable patients.
Currently, I spend just over half my week in the neonatal ward at Al Sabbah Children’s Hospital in Juba, which is South Sudan’s national referral hospital for children. The rest of the week is divided between general paediatric clinics in a UN camp for refugees from the war in Sudan as well as various other clinics and activities focussed on trying to unite medically complex children with the life-changing or life-saving services they need but struggle to access in the world’s newest and poorest country.
I’m looking forward to visiting Cardiff Bay Rotary Club on 30th September 2025! I hope to be able to share a bit about how I came to live and work in South Sudan, some of the incredible challenges here and some stories of how Rotary, among others, is helping to bring hope and healing to some very special children and their families.
