Heartwize:
Lifesaving skills including the use of a portable defibrillator
John Dehnel opened the session by bringing greetings from the Rotary Club of Melton Mowbray
and the E-Club of District 1070 on behalf of his fellow presenter, Steve Howe.
John gave a brief introduction to Heartwize, see https://heartwize.org/, a charity established to
enable people to recognise and respond to a cardiac arrest. It was launched in 2014 by two
cardiologists from Leicester University Hospital Trust with the target of ensuring every year 10
student in schools throughout Leicestershire and Rutland received the training.
A cardiac arrest is when the flow of blood stops, this is immensely dangerous as within a few
minutes the brain will be damaged and the chances of survival very low. A heat attack is caused by
damage to the heart muscles, this can lead to a cardiac arrest. The chances of someone surviving
a cardiac arrest decline at a rate of about 10% per minute and so swift action is essential.
