The Pout family, farmers and publicans
Chris Brealy gave us an interesting talk with photos of the family that became the
first licensees of the Plough. Sarah and George Pout ran the pub for 50 years, it wa
taken over by their daughter who married into the Silk family. The pub itself, once a
family home, was built as we know it now in the 1930s.
The Pout family gained, sold and lost many hundreds of acres of farmland across
Swalecliffe and Herne Bay, built houses for farmers and farm labourers, many stil
standing today. They produced, cereal crops, meat, dairy products and turnips
marketed across the east Kent area.
Chris gained his knowledge from three book for those wishing to delve deeper:
Pubs, skateboards and a slender spine by Bob Simmonds
Bricks, planes and camping sites by Bob Simmonds
The life and times of my family by Roger Turner.
Raffle was won by Neil Robinson, a bottle of red. PLEASE NOTE: Raffle prize
urgently needed.
Master at Arms
Nick extracted money for the usual misdemeanours, these included noisy phones,
getting lost, confusing pubs. Today is national radio and national cheddar day, also
Rachel Reeves 47th birthday (do check her LinkedIn account though, maybe older
or younger!).
Final toast was given by Ian.
Next meeting is a breakfast meeting 7.30 for 8am Simon Pollard will tell us briefl
about the Slow Mind Project and its benefits for mental health.
