To mark the historic moment of the 2nd World War ending
in Europe in 1945
Victory in Europe Day is the day celebrating the formal
acceptance by the Allies of World War 2 of Germany’s
surrender of its armed forces on Tuesday 8th May 1945
Up and down the country millions of people took to the
streets as communities got together to celebrate the end of
the conflict with street parties.
VE Day asked the end of most of the fighting in Europe
where 10’s of millions of service members and civilians
were killed. The conflict began in 1939 When Germany and
Russia invaded Poland. Among the dead were around 6
million Jews who were murdered by Nazi Germany.
On VE Day Winston Churchill delivered a speech
announcing the end of the war. He also acknowledged the
ongoing conflict if Japan and Asia. Japanese finally
surrendered on August 14th 1945 after atomic bombs were
dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Hitler had committed suicide on April 30th 1945……
David K was 8 yrs old on VE Day and remembers the
church bells ringing all day long.
