Rotary Breakfast meeting Thursday 8th May The Plough Minutes Celebration of 80th Anniversary of VE Day Apologies Andrew and Jean Martin, Fiona, Godfrey, Hilary, Lesley, Marian, Pippa and Spyros Guests Anne Hill Grace - read by Paul Birthdays Andrew Martin yesterday - Happy belated birthday International not mentioned this week !!!! Fundraising A completed 50 mile bike ride by Robert and 30 miles by Gerry and Ronan - well done - just under £200 collected today in-house Social In house quiz night at The Plough on 3rd June, tables of four + nibbles supplied by Mel, drinks from the bar. Bat n Trap at The Plough 20th May, please let either Robert or Nick know if you can attend. Gardening - well done all those that did a really good job at Whit n Tank on saturday, and well done Maureen and Elaine for organising and always being in touch with the powers that be at the hospital Next Week John and Shirley Edwards will be attending to receive The Paul Harris award for services to charity. Membership Anne still waiting to become a member and is already joining in where she can be of help Pat visited Marian in hospital on Monday and reports that she is still ongoing stroke therapy and so there are no plans for her to go home yet. She would love to have visitors and at present is in Kingston Ward at Canterbury hospital Today its the 80th Anniversary of VE Day and some members dressed to honour the event including a hard hat, some iffy scarfs and a rifle…. Sue read this following piece To mark the historic moment of the 2nd World War ending in Europe in 1945 Victory in Europe Day is the day celebrating the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War 2 of Germany’s surrender of its armed forces on Tuesday 8th May 1945 Up and down the country millions of people took to the streets as communities got together to celebrate the end of the conflict with street parties. VE Day asked the end of most of the fighting in Europe where 10’s of millions of service members and civilians were killed. The conflict began in 1939 When Germany and Russia invaded Poland. Among the dead were around 6 million Jews who were murdered by Nazi Germany. On VE Day Winston Churchill delivered a speech announcing the end of the war. He also acknowledged the ongoing conflict if Japan and Asia. Japanese finally surrendered on August 14th 1945 after atomic bombs were dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Hitler had committed suicide on April 30th 1945…… David K was 8 yrs old on VE Day and remembers the church bells ringing all day long. Raffle won by Pete Master at Arms - Nick doing his stuff.. fining all those that own German cars and those that didn’t dress accordingly for the day. its also World Donkey day and the 1st Bond film Premiered which was Dr No. Final Toast - David Kingham
