Swimathon 2015 - 24th April 2015

Swimathon 2015 took place on the 25th April at the Parish Wharf Leisure centre in Portishead.  Once again this major event in Portishead was an outstanding success, with nearly 500 swimmers taking part during the 7 hour event. Teams entered from a wide variety of local organisations such as schools, cubs, brownies and scout groups, from swimming clubs and from local businesses.  This year saw for the first time a major supermarket, Sainsbury’s enter a team.  83 teams of 6 swimmers in total took part, swimming as a relay for 35 minutes, raising money through sponsorship.

The total raised this year, including contributions from sponsors and Gift Aid is £13,200.41.  These monies raised are used to support many local good causes including those schools and youth groups that entered as well as the main charities supported by the Club this year, The Portishead Boathouse Appeal and St Peter’s Hospice.

The event was opened by the President of the Club, Rotarian John Bridgwater who started the first session at 12.45pm.  Sessions then were started by TV presenter Jemma Cooper (a regular supporter of Swimathon), Mark Cardwell from the Mercury, Kevin Emery from Gordano Living and Sam Brindle from the North Somerset Times.

Local businesses lend their support by helping to fund the running costs of the event thus ensuring that every bit of a swimmers sponsorship money goes to the charities and youth groups.  The Club has been well supported by the new Sainsbury’s store that provided some of the items in the goody bags which each swimmer receives and who also helps towards the Club’s support for the Homeless in Bristol.
Parish Wharf Leisure Centre also give a huge amount of support.  Their support is a key part in the success of this event.  A large number of volunteers also are on hand as lane counters, stewards and behind the scenes writing certificates, registering teams and manning the loudspeaker system.  All beavering away to ensure each session runs smoothly and that each swimmer enjoys the event.

The event has run now for 19 years and this years total will bring the monies raised for charity in that time to nearly £165,000.  The Rotary Club is very grateful for the fantastic support received each year.
Swimathan 2016 will be taking place on Saturday 19th March 2016.  We hope you will join us then.

Portishead Rotary would like to thank Sainsbury's Portishead for their support at the 2015 Swimathon.  Not only did they enter a team but they also donated to the goodie bags that were given out to all the competitors.  Many thanks.
