Talk on the Papworth Trust - at the Rose and Crown

Thu, Feb 19th 2015 at 12:00 am - 12:00 am

We were a small, but perfectly formed, group at the Rose and Crown on Thursday. The first surprise was that additional light bulbs had been installed, the second being that the fire was alight and everyone felt able to remove outer layers. The food was the usual good pub grub - looking around it was difficult to see anything other than 'licked clean' plates.

We were pleased to welcome Claire who had come for a second look at us and hopefully we'll see her again.
There were few formal announcements. On Saturday and Sunday, a number of members had attended a District Youth Music Final at the Cathedral and the Rivermead Community Showcase. The reports of both were full of praise for the high standards and it was good to hear that the Community Showcase was sold out.
I reported on an email from Bryan and Pearl and good to know they are following us from the other side of the world.

Our guest speaker was Ian, from Papworth Trust. Ian had been a service user following a horrendous accident 6 years ago and is now employed as a fundraiser. We were his first 'show' as a speaker and he did very well. I know of Papworth Hospital but knew nothing of Papworth Trust - which has a historic link but is entirely separate. The work the Trust performs is staggering but perhaps most surprising was that for a large charitable organisation, most of us had not heard of them. Ian recognises that and explained that the Trust accepts it needs to raise awareness before it can be more successful at fundraising. He told us of a potential development in Chelmsford for young people and from the ensuing discussions, I suspect we may not have heard the last of Papworth Trust. The vote of thanks by Chris, though of course eloquent, was almost unnecessary as I think we had already shown our appreciation via our interest.

Jan P opened the meeting with Grace and later extracted fines. Sue won the raffle - much to the annoyance of Roger who claimed that he has failed to win a single time since joining the club!
Saturday had us at another jumble sale in Danbury. Many thanks to members and friends who had made great efforts to collect items, and report for duties during the day. The efforts were rewarded as we made a profit of
