Talk by the Western School of Dance - at the College

Thu, Mar 26th 2015 at 12:00 am - 2:00 am

After missing a week to attend the District Council Meeting last week, it was good to be back at the club for an excellent evening.
Alongside a good attendance of club members we were able to welcome our guest speaker, Elizabeth Swan and her husband Jeff, President of Rivermead Mike Littlewood and his wife Janet, and an unexpected guest from Nairobi, Kenya.
Sue said Grace, and later on raised some good fines.
In parish announcements, we touched upon:
  • The Rivermead quiz on 16 May, for which we now have 12 signed up, but more welcome.
  • Events being run by Dunmow and Leigh on Sea clubs that look good fun
  • a reminder about need for Marshalls to support Baddow Races
  • reminder about the District Big Quiz on 6 June: we all need to work really hard to support this - we need minimum of 2500 participants so please try to spread the word as wide as possible.
  • Bill gave us more information on the Ongar Train evening on 4 July.
  • Richard gave us first details of 2 new club events for later in the year.
Details on all of the above can be found on the club website.
Sheila briefly reported on 5 visits in the past week, accompanying Stan.
After the usual comfort break, I was pleased to introduce as a guest the Honourable Sunjeev K Birdi - or Sonja to her friends. Sonja is a member of the Rotary Club of Nairobi and presented me with a banner from her club. She is also a Kenyan MP (so our first visit by an MP) currently on a short visit to London and decided to join us for the evening. [I have looked up the club on line; it is the 3rd oldest club in Africa and on youtube there is a video of Sonja speaking at the inauguration of the club President last year - looks a little more elaborate than our handovers!]. After a short address from Sonja, I introduced our planned guest for the evening, Elizabeth, who is the owner and Principle of the Weston School of Dance. Elizabeth gave us a brief talk on the Dance school and an overview of their programme and successes. We were then treated to performances of ballet, tap and modern dance by 5 of the students at the school (so first performance for us of these forms of dance - I recall we had belly dance some time ago). The young ladies, I think aged between 12 and 16, were, I thought, excellent and showed great poise in performing for us.
Jan Dear gave a vote of thanks and the raffle was won by Richard.
