Speaker on the life of Lilly Langtree- at the College

Thu, May 7th 2015 at 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Its been another busy Rotary week. On Tuesday, a team managed to defeat Rivermead and move onto the next round of the Hugh Markham Trophy. Wednesday evening saw 7 members of the club (plus my wife) support the Rotoract quiz. We were pipped at the post by Rivermead - on a stupid tie-break question!

On Thursday morning, Roger, Malcolm and I attended a meeting with other Chelmsford Rotarians to plan input to the Mildmay computers to Africa scheme. Hopefully we can make a success of the scheme which will be especially pleasing as a joint venture across the Chelmsford clubs.

For Thursday evening we were at college for a large attendance. Clare was again a guest and David Fenn from Corringham Thameside was our guest speaker.

Sect John opened the meeting with Grace and later seemed to be on a mission to grow club funds with copious fines.

I raised an urgent request for the club to make further donation of £40 towards the costs of enabling a young man from a local school to participate in the Final round of RYLA.; additional support is required towards the costs of specialist support because he has severe hearing problems. The club was pleased to agree this and I'm sure we wish him good luck for the Final.

Bill recirculated a schedule trying to get more people to participate in the scatter week planned for week of 28 May. It's perhaps a good thing that we don't have a meeting planned for that week because it would seem that only 9 people would be attending! I was chatting to David Fenn and he tells me that his club regularly arranges for 2 or 3 (different) members to go to other clubs - to spread the word about what they do, learn from other clubs, and enjoy meeting other people. I am already planning to go to 2 clubs that week; if anyone wants me to accompany them to another club, I'm happy to try to fit in.

David Fenn gave us an interesting talk on the life and times of Lily Langtry; it was interesting to be reminded that the cult of 'celebrity' didn't start with reality TV. Linda S gave vote of thanks on behalf of the club and Malcolm won the raffle.

On Saturday, of course we had one of our main events of the year. Walking for water. A large contingent of members and some friends were stationed around various parts of Chelmsford to direct the walkers whilst others were engaged in administration and refreshments. This year we managed to attract about 130 walkers so a small increase on last year. At one stage we had hoped for 200+ but there were unfortunately late withdrawals. As we have known for a while, getting events such as this established and growing is a lengthy process and as long as we make steady progress each year we should be able to look forward to further success. Thanks to all who helped and well done to Richard for his efforts on this.
