Talk on Trinity House - at The Miami

Thu, Jun 4th 2015 at 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Last Saturday, some members enjoyed the Chelmsford President's dinner.

On Monday we held the final club council of my year and we will cover a couple of issues at a forthcoming Business meeting.

Tuesday found Bill's Hugh Markham team at Hockley to battle against Rochford at 10 pin bowling. Even the smartness of our team shirts (as shown by photo on the website) couldn't get us over the line so we wish our victors best of luck in the next round.

On Thursday we tried our new venue at Miami Hotel. As well as a good attendance of members we welcomed Claire (possibly for the final time as a guest, her membership application having been 'approved') and our guest speaker.[feedback on the Miami - room, food, price etc - will be welcome as we consider whether it could/should be a more regular venue; let Richard or me have any comments]
Sect John opened with Grace - and subsequently raised heavy fines on members.

In parish announcements we reminded people about the Big Quiz, District Handover and MOTOE. Malcolm gave us an update on our golf team's progress in the District competition, which will see them in the national tournament; good luck to them. A number of members reported briefly on visits they had made to other clubs during scatter week.

After the usual comfort break we welcomed as our guest speaker, Commodore Barry Bryant who gave us an illustrated talk on the history and operation of Trinity House. Barry's career as a senior Royal Navy officer and his involvement in many seafaring charities clearly equipped him to cover a wide range around his subject. There were plenty of questions fired at him and he demonstrated his love of all things nautical. It often surprises me how services such as this, which are clearly essential, operate as arms length, voluntary, charitable simply because of the way they developed in history. Dr John gave vote of thanks on behalf of members.

We had 2 raffle prizes - the usual wine and bunch of flowers courtesy of Malcolm. Peter was first out and chose the flowers leaving me to take home the wine.

Yesterday a number of members attended the 'Big Quiz' at Southend. Unfortunately I was unable to attend due to grandchildren commitments but I understand that whilst it was an enjoyable day, the attendance target was not quite met.

Next Thursday a few members will be risking my culinary skills at a BBQ. Lets hope for fine weather so that the burger buns don't get too soggy.
