Slavery past and present - at the Rose and Crown

Thu, Jun 18th 2015 at 12:00 am -

We had a decent attendance on Thursday at the Rose & Crown and were pleased to welcome as our guest speaker, Harry Payne, who is well know as a local Rotarian. Bill said grace and subsequently levied fines. The food that I saw left on plates all seemed to be due to people being full rather than not liking it!

In parish news, I mentioned DG Stan's invitation to all clubs to make donations for the charity that was supported by the Big Quiz- it transpired that we actually had more people in attendance than any other club so it was felt that we had shown our support in that way. I reported that, after a little rounding, I had managed to retain £100 from my BBQ, which I have added to the sponsorship for my Snowdon climb - again, many thanks.

Bryan reported on a visit by Pearl and him to St Andrews Rotary club and Sheila reported on attending Bishops Stortford charter night.

After the usual comfort break, Harry Payne gave us a passionate talk on his interest and involvement in tackling worldwide slavery.   He has clearly studied and researched his ground very well and opened my eyes about some of the awful things taking place and for which we, as consumers, are partly culpable. There were a range of questions and follow up comments from club members and Michelle offered an interesting and personal vote of thanks.
