'The Toastmaster' - at the Rose and Crown

Thu, Aug 6th 2015 at 6:30 pm -

We had a fairly good attendance on Thursday for an excellent speaker. In addition to our guest speaker, we were pleased to welcome Stan Keller as guest. President Richard attended but didn't feel up to taking the chair so I carried on.

Kathryn said Grace and later extracted fines.

There were no important parish announcement - its a fairly quiet time of year - so the first part of meeting was even more relaxed than usual. We were though able to congratulate Roger and Malcolm on another golf success and they are now into the semi-final of the District tournament.

Our guest speaker was Richard Palmer, from the English Toastmasters union (an organisation which we discovered, he had himself formed).Having sat next to him all evening, I was sure that he would deliver an interesting and amusing talk - and I was not disappointed. Richard told us about some of his experiences as a toastmaster, MC, events organiser. He has worked across the world and was able to 'name-drop' widely. He had brought along a large selection of his regalia, costumes and photos. There were many questions as we went along and I suspect without my intervention, we may have had an usually late night. David offered vote of thanks on behalf of all.

We had 2 raffle prizes; the usual vintage wine, won by Bill, and an annual membership of the Society of St George (which had been arranged by our speaker). This was won by Donald but, as a scot, he may not be allowed to join!

Next Thursday we were due to hold the annual picnic at Hylands but we realised there already something else at Hylands (V festival will probably cause some closures). As an alternative, Kathryn has kindly offered her garden as a venue, so we'll meet there. Bring your own food and drink and look forward to seeing you there.
