Business Meeting - at the College

Thu, Oct 22nd 2015 at 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Thursday found us at the college again for another good meal and an interesting Business meeting.

Peter opened the meeting with Grace and there were no guests for us to to welcome.
There were no parish announcements but Bryan reported on the performance of our cribbage team (better luck next time) and Bill told us how much he had enjoyed the recent Chelmsford club Jazz night - despite not liking jazz!

The business meeting proved to be an interesting and lively session with just about everyone contributing to the discussions, Sect John will idc prepare minutes so won't attempt to recount the full meeting but will pick out a few points.

  • We discussed the possibility of organizing a good social event instead of the (already cancelled) President's night. There was support for this and we will explore what we can get arranged; BUT, whatever we do is likely to need something like 50 people to break- even so it will need to be supported in body as well as show of hands.
  • The club agreed that we should proceed with the proposed Corporate Membership scheme so the paper will now be finalised and sent up the line to District. The only tweak from the proposal sent out was that we should make Corporate Membership 'Annual' to be renewed, or not, each year.
  • I reported an a note from Pat Gaudin about the possibility of a regular Rotary slot on Chelmsford Community radio. All agreed we should pursue this and I have notified Pat that Kathryn, Bill and myself are happy to explore more how we can make this work - If anyone else wants to get involved in this, please let me know.
  • Bill reminded us that the club had 'voted' for a Race Night - but after putting in a good deal of effort, we have now had to cancel twice. This led to a recognition that if we want to be a position to support local and international causes, we do need to raise funds somehow; the only alternative is for members to simply 'contribute' (£100 each?) and forget about fundraising activities - hopefully there is no real appetite for this approach. This prompted a wide-ranging debate about the whole issue of fundraising and, as suggested by Marilyn, we agreed to set a aside a Thursday club meeting for a full discussion on this; we will see when we can get this into the programme.
  • We still need to fix a date for Walk4water; Jan D will check available dates for the scout hut.
Claire imposed fines and Jane took home the raffle wine.

On Saturday I represented the District Council Meeting along with Kathryn. It was the usual mixture of District committee reports along with some interesting guest speakers; we heard from Essex Community Foundation, which distributes millions to good causes in Essex each year - but did we know anything about them? DG Alan Clarke told us about his plan for District Rotary day next year which he hopes will be an inter - club bike race at the Ford Test track - we may have to try to coax Richard Hodgson back for a guest appearance, unless of course we have another budding Bradley Wiggins in the club.
