Andy Suddon: Stephen Smith - The Chesters Bard

Thu, Sep 10th 2015 at 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Weekly meeting with guest speaker

Last week's Rotary club members were treated to a masterclass in poetry by the "Chesters Bard" Steve Smith.  President Mairhi Trickett introduced Steve, secretary of Jedburgh Rotary Club,  who referred to his deep interest in writing and poetry from the age of 9 and it was an interest that had never waned.  He outlined the "nuts-and-bolts" of the subject as well as the influence foreign languages have had on the English language and, indeed words like cul-de-sac - French - and bungalow - Indian - are two common examples.  Steve has published books of his poems, the proceeds of which are given to charity through his Rotary club, which cover a wide range of subjects as he gets his ideas, inspiration and themes from everywhere no matter whether it be nature, the countryside round his abode, hill-walking or life's many experiences and he gave quotes from some of them.  He has also written and published two books and is working on a third at present.  Many questions were generated after which Andrew Suddon gave the vote of thanks for an enthralling and inspirational evening.
