Talk - Colchester-Centre of the Universe - at the College

Thu, Jan 28th 2016 at 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

PDG Ian McMeekan is a Colchester Blue Badge Guide and will be telling us about the fascinating history of Britain's Oldest Recorded Town.

We had yet another good attendance, lets hope that continues throughout the year.
Our only guest was our speaker. Peter said Grace.

The announcements were mainly related to history.

We have received details of the Marconi exhibition being held in Hall St (as trailed in the talk we had a few weeks ago). David will put on our website a link to details about the exhibition and a series of talks. We have been invited to participate as volunteers at the exhibition; it will run on Fridays, Sats and Suns from 11 March to 28 May, 11-3 and they need people to do 2 hour shifts. . As far as I can tell we would be able to wear our club uniform and wouldn't need any particular skills or knowledge so it could be a good opportunity for a public Rotary presence.

Claire has located a chap who does guided historical walks in Chelmsford and asked whether members would be interested in couple of hour walk on a Thursday evening if we could get the cost to about £4 each; there was strong support for this so Claire will pursue.

After the usual break our guest speaker continued the history theme. PDG Ian McMeekan, gave us an interesting talk about the history of Colchester, including an explanation of how/why Colchester was 'centre of the universe' for a short period in Roman times. The talk led to a wide range of questions and Ian volunteered to arrange a summer history walk through Colchester if we are interested later in the year. Peter gave vote of thanks on our behalf.

Before leaving Ian told us that he is scheduled to run the District quiz in 2017 and asked if he could call on us to run the marking scoring etc.

Chris raised numerous fines and Roger again managed to avoid winning the raffle - this time by 1 ticket! - Linda being the winner.

Next week we are college for a talk on BBC Essex radio so for any budding DJs amongst members that should be very useful.
