At this morning's meeting, our speaker was Dr Roy Bailey-Wood, who talked about the Kenfig Nature Reserve. The area once had a Norman town and remains of the castle keep still stand. It was attacked many times by the Welsh, but was eventually overcome by the encroaching sands, creating today's dunes. This is an SSI, particularly for the quantity variety and scarcity of its population of orchids. The worry now is that cutbacks in local authority funding will mean that essential maintenance will be compromised.
