Lunchtime meeting at Cotswold Bowls Club : Speaker Celia Hargrave

Mon, Mar 14th 2016 at 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Celia will be talking about her participation in the Sahara Marathon.

Celia is 62, a former head teacher at a Birmingham school, who has been a member of Sheepscombe WI for 19 years. She is a magistrate, fundraising co-ordinator for Sheepscombe Village Hall and she and her husband, Dave, open their garden for the National Garden Scheme. If that's not enough she also co-ordinates a club for the elderly and housebound, held monthly in Stroud.

She is also a marathon runner. She started running at the end of 1980 with her husband in preparation for her first London marathon in 1981. Her best marathon time, in Birmingham was two hours 46 minutes. Celia's ultra-distance and extreme running events are incredible. She has run 24 track races, her best performance is just over 120 miles for which she was then ranked sixth in the world.

During 18 days in 2000, Celia raised over £7,000 for her village hall at Sheepscombe and she was the first British woman to compete in the Sahara marathon – a 144 miles stage race in the desert! And in the Trans 333, she ran 208 miles in the Sahara desert in 86 hours during which time she just had two lots of two hours sleep.
