The History of Tailoring
Paul Read
How did Savile Row become famous for top quality tailoring and what happens if you order
a suit from one of the top names there? Paul Read came along to open our eyes to the origins and methods used in tailoring over the years.
He explained that modern tailoring started with the invention of the sewing machine in the
late eighteenth century and went on to tell us about other advances which helped to make London the world centre for quality suit making. After talking about the history, Paul went through the time frame and the intricacies of having a bespoke suit made. The club were amazed to discover the differences between 'off the peg', made to measure and proper bespoke tailoring.
At the end of the evening Richard Harrison expressed the gratitude of the club for this
fascinating insight into suit making.
