Grace: Said by Jean Martin DINNER Speaker: Lesley introduced our speaker for tonight, David Kingham who had kindly stepped in at the last minute to replace our scheduled speaker who has had to appear as a professional witness in court. David then spoke about the ‘Founding Fathers of Herne Bay’ - a fascinating story from the 1830’s onwards, mixing entrepreneurs, bankrupts, smugglers (and dung). Some well known historical persons have been involved in Herne Bay’s story, including Thomas Telford who designed the clock tower. Birthdays: The club wished Pete a happy 60th birthday. Club Business: David M reported back on progress re the rose garden. Chestfield PCC have now met and are in favour of us taking over the maintenance of the garden. We still have to obtain permission from CCC to us mowing the grass. PCC weren’t keen on the idea of having raised vegetable beds ‘though. Decision needed: are club members prepared to take on the responsibility of maintaining the garden? This was voted on and carried by a show of hands. There were no objections. Lesley confirmed that the calendar for January to July is being prepared and will be circulated shortly. David M confirmed that the Quiz Night on 13th November is now sold out. Greetings from Other Clubs: greetings from Canterbury Sunrise and Herne Bay. Raffle: Raffle was won by Trevor, Maureen and David B. Master-at- Arms: Nick did his thing. Final Toast: Godfrey gave the toast. Date of Next Meeting: Business Meeting @ 0715am on 30th September, at the Golf Club
