On Zoom: Pete; Kathy. Apologies: David B; Hilary; Iain; Maureen; Myfanwy; Margaret; Nick; Pat; Reggie; Robert. Guests: None today BREAKFAST Almoner: Jackie said everyone is well. Correspondence: Lesley has received information about a Quiz Night for the Forest of Blean club on Saturday 27th November. She needs 4 people to fill up a table. Sue said she can be one. Club Business: One matter from the recent Board meeting was about whether we should exclude guests from Business meetings. One argument is that it is inappropriate to have guests present when contentious matters might need to be decided eg regarding the membership of individuals. The counter argument is that prospective members need to see us warts and all. There doesn’t appear to be an actual rule about this. Suggestion that a prospective member shouldn’t attend a Business meeting as their first meeting, nor if memberships are to be discussed. Gardening at the Whit & Tank was meant to be this Saturday. However we also have car parking on Sunday. Decision to defer until 23rd October. Reports from Committee Chairs: Comm Voc. Kathy reminded people that the deadline for bringing filled shoe boxes for the Romanian Shoe Box Appeal is 28th October. Kathy said that there are two applications being prepared for District Grants, one for Food Friends and one for HERstay. We might have to match fund these grants to the tune of £500-£700. Also, we already have an application made re Bhutan. Are we OK with these applications going ahead? There was a show of hands in favour of proceeding. Note: any member not present today can register his/her dissent by emailing Dave C. International. Re Walk4Water, Andrew B confirmed that letters have gone to the schools; 4 positive responses so far. Our Global Scholar, Lauren, has arrived in London. She may visit us at some point. Foundation & Fundraising. Re Polio, Sue will contact Simon the vicar of All Saints about lighting up the church with purple lights. The Quiz Night at the latter in November is now sold out. Reminder that we aren’t providing a Ploughman’s supper this year because of COVID. Some pre-wrapped snacks will be provided. Membership. Pete said he is looking into applying for a grant from District for publicity materials. David M said we can have an advert in the Parish magazine 4x a year for free. Speakers. Members to notes some changes in the dates when some speakers will attend. Last week’s talk from David K went well. Carers UK. Lesley is the local champion for the partnership between the latter and Rotary. She has some leaflets to distribute; can members take these and pin them up in local clubs, shops etc? Meals Steward. So as to order meat ahead of time, the Golf Club now need to know the numbers for breakfasts and evening meals earlier. All members please note; if you are not coming for breakfast, you must tell Robert by 5pm Monday evening. If you are not attending an evening meal, you must tell Robert by the previous Thursday. If you do not tell Robert, then it is assumed you will attend, and you will have to pay. Also, telling Robert verbally doesn’t count - there are too many distractions at meetings - so it must be a notification by email. Any Other Business. Sue reported that Sarah (a previous member) is doing well. Jean M said she bumped into Jean S recently and she is also well. Greetings from Other Clubs. Lesley and Godfrey visited Herne Bay club last night, and bring their greetings. Raffle. Was won by David M and Godfrey. Master-at-Arms. No Nick today, so Godfrey did this using a Bertie Basset tin. Godfrey spilled the beans that it will be Lesley’s birthday tomorrow. Toast to Rotary. Was given by Marian. Next Meeting. 07.30am Thursday 7th October @ the Golf Club. Speaker: Fred Ross for the Hill 112 Memorial Fund.
