PROMISING YOUNG WRITERS PRAISED BY OLD WESTCLIFFIAN!
Local writer Sam Lierens was pleased to present the winner of the annual Southend Rotary Young Writer competition Fountain (Yr.10 WHSG) with her certificate and prize and added a copy of her own latest book Daughters of War. Sam, an Alumni of Westcliff High School for Girls was herself excited to be back there on such an important occasion. She said of Fountain’s poem: I loved the knowledge of your subject and the clarity of expression adding that fellow judge Richard Kurti and she: appreciated the innovative approach. When asked by Headteacher Andrew Cooper why she had entitled it Bristlecone Pine, Fountain explained that she had researched the subject and found that the bristlecone Pine is the oldest tree in existence, some 5060 years old. She said: Reading gives you knowledge and knowledge is power.
Rtn Catrina Lambert presented Chidimma (Yr.9 WHSG) with a special prize for her Grandfather : Granddaughter conversation piece which was highly commended by the judges who “loved the structure …and the dialogue was very powerful”
After the presentations Sam Lierens gave all year 10 students some much appreciated advice on creative writing.
The poem and conversation by Fountain and Chidimma have been entered into the Rotary District 1240 round of the competition.
