Stephen King: Studying in Jerusalem

23 January 2020

Stephen King, librarian at the Duke of York's RM School, told members of Dover Rotary Club on 23 January 2020 about his ten-day visit to Israel to study at the World Holocaust Remembrance Centre, Yad Vashem. The talk was held to mark world Holocaust Day.

Mr King, a historian, told how the centre was set up in 1953 and was now being visited by a million people a year. He screened a series of photographs taken at the centre including one of the "cattle trucks" used to transport millions of Jews to the gas chambers.

The centre contained names and details of 4.5 million of the six million Jews who were slaughtered by the Nazis. Space has been left to fill in the names of others yet to be identified.

In the grove, dedicated to non-Jews who had helped Jews escape death, was a tablet recording the names of ten British prisoners of war who, while working on a farm, discovered a Jewish girl hiding in a barn. The prisoners risked death by smuggling the girl into their prison camp, kept her alive and fed her for four months before handing her over to the safety of the Red Cross.
