RWANDA has been much in the news lately, but Hereford City Rotary Club’s connection with the African country goes back many years.
The club has long supported the Isoko Women’s Cooperative in Rusizi and was delighted to welcome back Mary Watkins who delivered one of her regular updates on the group’s activities.
There are now around 40 members in the group and they are all trained as tailors – the Hereford City club has assisted with the provision of sewing machines which helps them make clothes for their families and to sell.
The aim is that basic living conditions are improved and group members can earn a sustainable income to support themselves and their families.
Mary’s presentation included a video message of thanks from members of the group.
As well as the cooperative, Mary is now involved in developing the Friends of Rwandan Rugby – around 1,000 children each month are being coached by the organisation’s 15 rugby development officers.
The group are seeking donations of old sets of shirts and financial help - £1 will pay for a child to receive a full year’s coaching and participation in tournaments.
Full details of how to help are available on the website https://friendsofrwandanrugby.com
