Rotary Club of South Foreland – Recent News

The Club was awarded a banner for being number 2 in the District for raising money for Rotary Foundation.  President John Dunkley received the award from District Governor Paul Frostick at Conference.  (photo 1)

Royal British Legion Poppy Collection

This took place at Morrisons in Dover from Saturday 29th October until Saturday 12th November.  The club liaised with local organiser Christine Walton and created a rota of volunteers in shifts of two hours for six hours a day. These were from our club, the Dover Rotary Club, Inner Wheel and former volunteer marshals at the Health Centre.  In all there were 40 volunteers as well as cadets and their supervisors on the two Saturdays.

In total £5,000 was collected over the two weeks which was a tremendous effort and testament to the support and generosity of local people as well as the proactive attitude of the volunteers. (photo2)

Shuffleboard Evening: Friday 18th November.

We welcomed back the Shuffleboard Evening for the first time since 2019.  This time the event was organised inhouse as Adrian and his friend from Brighton are no longer able to come all that way.  Thanks to those club members who stepped in to run the event.

It was well attended by approximately 85 people and much enjoyed; though it seemed like organised chaos at times it really went very smoothly.

It was good to welcome members of Alastair Lyon’s family.  He had always taken a leading role in organising the Shuffleboard Evening and so we took time to remember him and all he did for the club.

A total of £1,200 was raised from the entrance fees and raffle.  Half that will go to the End Polio Campaign and will be trebled to £1,800 by the Gates Foundation, while the remainder will go to local charities.

We hope to run this popular event again next year. (photos 3,4 and 5)

Cinque Ports Rotary Clubs: Meeting on Wednesday 23rd November

This was attended by sixty-one members and guests from coastal Rotary Clubs between Hastings to Sandwich.  Lunch was followed by a presentation about the Dover Citadel development by David de Min.  A report on his presentation is a featured page on the club website.

Club Christmas Lunch:  Wednesday 7th December

This was held at the Marina Hotel and attended by 23 members, partners and guests.  It was good to meet up without restrictions this year.  After a good meal we had a Christmas Quiz which was won by Ron and Edith.  Congratulations to them.  We also listened to several members who told stories with tenuous links to Christmas.  The highlight was the finding of that which was lost.

Many thanks to John for organising this enjoyable event.  We wish all club members, families and friends a happy and peaceful Christmas.
